Our guest this week is Kim Johnson, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology), a veterinary oncologist and co-chair of the 2026 AAHA Oncology Guidelines for Dogs and Cats. She is also the author of Positive Purrspectives: The heART of Healing, a book focused on promoting well-being and resilience within the veterinary profession. This episode centers on AAHA’s new Oncology Guidelines, why they were designed to support general practice teams, and how they can serve as a practical resource when guiding patients and families through cancer diagnoses, treatment decisions, and referral coordination.

She also shares insights on the importance of building thoughtful workflows and tools that help reduce the stress of reaching a diagnosis and navigating sensitive conversations about prognosis, all while keeping compassion at the forefront. We also spend time discussing her book, the inspiration behind it, and her vision for making veterinary medicine a more sustainable career through both individual resilience and collective efforts.
